Aakash Chopra: India’s decision to qualify for World Cup final round backfired

2 min read

Former Team India opener Aakash Chopra has shared a video on his YouTube channel in which he argues that Team India’s decision to play the 2023 World Cup final against Australia on a black soil was a mistake.

According to Chopra, India should have opted for a pitch that would allow the batsmen to play more freely. Instead, the pitch on the black soil offered help to the spinners, which worked in Australia’s favor.

“We didn’t even need to think about what kind of pitch we should use against Australia. If you bat first, then the pitch should not prevent you from playing freely. When you choose a dry black pitch, if you think that, then you are shooting yourself in the foot,” Chopra said.

India have scored only 240 runs in 50 matches, not enough to challenge Australia’s batting line-up. Chopra believes that the Indian bowlers are frustrated by the inability of the batsmen to put up a competitive total.

Chopra also stressed on the importance of minimizing mistakes in crucial matches. He cited Australia’s ability to cope with pressure and fearlessness as key factors in their victory.

“There are two factors in the final encounter. Firstly, the team with fewer errors is usually in a better position. They are the teams that can withstand the pressure. The other factor is the teams that dare to play without fear,” Chopra said.

Australia were 47/3 in the ball chase but managed to pull back and win the match by seven runs. Chopra believes that Travis Head’s 120-ball 137 was a crucial innings for Australia.

“The Australian team proved that. They proved that the team that makes fewer mistakes and is fearless is more likely to win,” Chopra said.
