Capitals seeking move for top-six forward

1 min read

Throughout the summer, Washington Capitals’ general manager Brian MacLellan has been actively engaged in seeking forward acquisitions and remains committed to bolstering the team’s top six prior to the start of training camp next month.

“We initiated some discussions during the draft, and these talks may continue or potentially take a different direction,” MacLellan stated, as reported by Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic. “The outcome remains to be seen.”

Although the Capitals secured the services of Max Pacioretty, a six-time 30-goal scorer, on a one-year contract during free agency, his age and recent injury record may not be sufficient to address the team’s 20th-ranked offense from the previous season.

Sources indicate that in June, MacLellan informed other teams of the availability of forward Anthony Mantha for a potential trade. However, no deal came to fruition at that time. Additionally, long-standing center Evgeny Kuznetsov expressed his desire for a trade this offseason and is also rumored to be a possible trade candidate.

The Capitals’ maneuvering options for trades are currently constrained, as the team currently exceeds the $83.5 million salary cap limit by $700,000, according to Cap Friendly.

Washington’s recent absence from the playoffs, a departure from their consistent postseason appearances since 2014, prompted changes within the organization. Peter Laviolette, the former head coach, was replaced by Spencer Carbery in response to the team’s underwhelming performance during the previous season.
