Capitals’ Wilson keen to return to playoffs in 2024

1 min read

Tom Wilson and the rest of the Washington Capitals were disappointed about missing the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In a press conference, Wilson emphasized that the team’s belief in their ability to win made falling short of the playoffs a failure. It was the first time they had missed the postseason since 2013-14, which coincided with Wilson’s arrival in Washington.

Determined to bounce back, Wilson expressed their hunger to get back on track and restore the winning culture the Capitals had built over the years. He wanted to see their home ice become a fortress once again, making it difficult for opposing teams to secure victories in Washington.

Despite trade rumors surrounding him during the offseason, Wilson decided to put an end to the speculation by signing a seven-year, $45.5-million extension that would begin in the 2024-25 season. The whole experience was “weird,” but it motivated both Wilson and general manager Brian MacLellan to reach an agreement quickly, solidifying Wilson’s commitment to the team.

The 2022-23 season saw Wilson’s debut delayed until January due to an ACL injury, but he made an impact upon his return, scoring 13 goals and tallying 22 points in 33 games, finishing the season with a four-game goal streak.
