ESPN personality claimed he would retire if Diamondbacks won Game 7

2 min read

The Arizona Diamondbacks ended the Philadelphia Phillies’ season on Tuesday night. It also may have ended the career of an ESPN personality – if he’s true to his word.

Chris “Rabid Dog” Russo made a bold declaration on his radio program on Monday. The longtime sports radio personality staked his career on the Diamondbacks’ ability to complete a series comeback against the Phillies. He declared that he would “retire on the spot” if they were able to pull off a series upset against the Phillies.

Said Russo: “From day one, I’ve been amazed at Arizona. First of all, they beat Milwaukee, and I thought they were going to lose against the Dodgers. I never thought they’d be back in Philadelphia for another Game 6.

“I’ll try it again: if they win (Monday night), I won’t be surprised, I’ll be shocked. I’ll say it now – if they win the next two games in the next two days and win the seven-game series, I’ll retire on the spot if they do.”

Russo even stood firm on his promise after the Diamondbacks won Game Six.

“I’ll keep my promise!” Russo posted on X hours before Tuesday’s game.

As fate would have it, the Diamondbacks won Game 7, 4-2. After the game, Russo was speechless.

He posted three “lost and sweaty face” emojis on X. He also posted an emoji of a man holding a hand in the air. He also posted a GIF of a man holding a glass of wine with the caption, “Enjoy your retirement.”

Russo is best known for his sports radio show with Mike Francesa. The show was a huge success from 1989 to 2008.

The pair went their separate ways in 2008, with Russo moving to SiriusXM, where he also co-hosted “High Heat” on MLB Network and served as a panelist on various ESPN programs.
Since the end of the NLCS, Russo’s “High Heat” co-host Alanna Rizzo, 64, and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo have both made fun of him.
