Marchand can be team’s next captain

2 min read

Former Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy believes that Brad Marchand has the qualities to succeed Patrice Bergeron as the team’s next captain. Speaking on “The Cam & Strick Podcast,” Cassidy praised Bergeron’s leadership style, highlighting his ability to lead by example, work hard in practice, and make everyone feel welcome.

As the longest-tenured Bruin following Bergeron’s retirement in July, Marchand has been with the team since the 2009-10 season and has an impressive record with 372 goals and 862 points in 947 contests, ranking within the top 10 in franchise history in both categories. Additionally, Marchand played a crucial role in the team’s 2011 Stanley Cup victory and holds several playoff records for the organization.

Marchand can be team’s next captain

Cassidy coached Marchand for six seasons before his departure from Boston in June. He acknowledged that the Bruins have several strong candidates for the captaincy, including David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy, both of whom are younger options.

If Marchand does take on the captaincy role, Cassidy believes he will need to adapt his leadership style to work effectively with the younger players on the team. Marchand’s high expectations for himself and others are an asset, but he may need to refine his communication approach to connect with the younger players.

Before officially naming Bergeron as captain, the Bruins played a prank on him by pretending to give the honor to Marchand, even going as far as sewing a “C” onto his No. 63 jersey. Ultimately, Bergeron was appointed captain in 2021, while Marchand has served as an alternate captain since the 2018-19 season.
